5 Things Every SSS Member Needs to Know

Being an SSS member does not only provide retirement pension after completing the minimum required contributions. It also offers benefits such as sickness, disability, maternity, and access to various loans.

Typically, this provident fund is jointly funded by the employer and the employee. However, an SSS member may also continue paying as a voluntary member even after separation from employment or when starting a business.

Who Can Pay as a Voluntary SSS Member?

SSS members who stopped paying contributions because they resigned, became self-employed, or took a break from formal employment may continue paying as voluntary members. There is no need to get a new SSS number or pay for all the missed months and years.

You only need to start paying again for the current applicable month or quarter. Your existing SSS number and past contributions remain valid and will still be counted toward your total contribution record.

Payment Schedule and Deadlines

In the past, contribution deadlines for voluntary members followed a schedule based on the last digit of the SS number (for example, 1 or 2 = 10th of the month, 3 or 4 = 15th, and so on). Current practice now allows voluntary members to pay monthly or quarterly, usually until the last day of the month or quarter, but SSS still publishes official schedules and coding rules from time to time. To avoid outdated information, always confirm the latest deadline rules on the official SSS website or your My.SSS account.

  • Voluntary members may pay monthly or quarterly.
  • Payments must be made on or before the applicable deadline to be posted and credited.
  • Check the latest SSS contribution table and payment schedule online before paying.

How to Check Your SSS Records Online

You can view your contribution history, loan status, and other records through the SSS online portal at
https://www.sss.gov.ph. To register, you will be asked for details such as the receipt number of your last contribution or other reference information, depending on SSS’ current registration rules.

Once your My.SSS account is activated (which may take up to 24 hours), you can:

  • View your posted contributions and total number of contribution months.
  • Check your outstanding loan balance and payment history.
  • Verify if former employers have correctly remitted their counterpart contributions.

Milestones for SSS Benefits

Here are some important contribution milestones related to major SSS benefits. Always verify current rules, as policies and tables are updated periodically by SSS.

SSS Loans

  • At least 36 monthly contributions are generally required to qualify for many types of SSS salary loans. In addition, you often need at least 6 contributions within the last 12 months before loan application.

SSS Retirement Pension

  • You must have at least 120 monthly contributions to qualify for a lifetime monthly pension at retirement age.
  • If you keep paying beyond 120 months and increase your Monthly Salary Credit (MSC), especially in the last five years before retirement, your pension amount will usually be higher.

Maternity Benefit

  • You may avail of SSS Maternity Benefit multiple times, subject to current SSS rules. Historically, members could avail up to four times, but maternity law updates and SSS guidelines may affect this, so always check the latest policy.
  • To qualify, you must have at least three posted contributions within the 12‑month period immediately before the semester of childbirth, miscarriage, or emergency termination of pregnancy (based on current SSS guidelines).

Loan Condonation and Restructuring Programs

SSS has previously offered loan condonation or restructuring programs, such as the 2018 program that ran from April 2 to October 1 and was later extended until April 1, 2019. These programs allowed members with delinquent loans to restructure their balances and have penalties reduced or condoned.

However, these condonation programs are time-bound and not permanent. For current or upcoming condonation or consolidation offers, always refer to official SSS announcements or the SSS website, as dates and terms change over time.

Important Reminders

  • Always follow the latest SSS Contribution Table when choosing your Monthly Salary Credit as a voluntary member.
  • Keep your receipts and electronic payment confirmations as proof of contribution.
  • Regularly check your My.SSS account to ensure your payments are posted correctly.
  • For official and updated rules, deadlines, and benefit qualifications, rely on SSS issuances and the official SSS site—not solely on old printed guides or social media posts.
